University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine Dean Dr. Jacques Bradwejn has assumed the position of chair of the Board of Directors at the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC). Dr. Bradwejn’s two-year mandate began in April after succeeding Dr. Tom Feasby, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, who held the position for one year.
“Dr. Bradwejn brings a steady hand to the position of board chair,” said Dr. Feasby. “He is a strong academic and his interest in good governance will serve AFMC well.”
Established in 1943, the AFMC is the academic partnership of Canada’s faculties of medicine promoting the advancement of academic medicine by reviewing and developing national standards for medical education, developing national policies appropriate to the aims and purposes of the faculties, fostering research into major areas of interest, and representing the Canadian faculties of medicine to key agencies.
The AFMC is governed by its Board of Directors which is comprised of the deans of Canada’s 17 faculties of medicine and four public members. As chair of the Board of Directors, Dr. Bradwejn leads the board in ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of its role for the association.
“I am very pleased to be occupying this important position within the AFMC and having the opportunity to continue working with my colleagues nationwide,” said Dr. Bradwejn. “The AFMC plays a pivotal role in the advancement of medical education and research, as well as matters that relate to the health of Canadians. I feel privileged to be at the helm of the board’s ongoing dialogues and initiatives.”
