On September 20, at the Westin Hotel, the International Office had the pleasure of welcoming students from Brazil participating in a Science Without Borders program. The event, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Brazil, the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost, and the Office of the Vice-President, Research, allowed the students to meet representatives of their embassy and host faculties. Staff from the faculties of Engineering, Science and Arts, the Canadian Bureau for International Education, the Office of International Research and the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute were present, along with Vice-President Academic and Provost Christian Detellier.

The Science Without Borders program is special because of how its elements— second language learning, knowledge acquisition in a program of study and an introduction to research at the undergraduate level—complement each other. Participants will complete the 2012-2013 academic year at the University of Ottawa. Some are currently enrolled in courses in their program of study, while others are enrolled in the English Intensive Program. Many of the students will get the opportunity to do a research internship during the 2013 summer session.

As with any mobility program, it is a unique opportunity for participants to experience new learning methods, adapt to a new culture, develop useful skills in our era of globalization and achieve a deeper understanding of others and oneself. It is also the perfect opportunity for regular uOttawa students to experience the international character of our campus and to learn more about our visitors.
